INDUSTRIAL POTENTIALITY IN BONGAIGAON
The district Bongaigaon endowed with vast natural resources, power potentiality, has a significant place in the country for perspective industrialization and growth. Instead of rich resources, present industrial scenario of Bongaigaon District is much below expectation. It is a fact that the lack of industrial atmosphare with unorganised effort industrialization is the prominent feature of the economy of the district.
The Govt. of Assam vide their notification No. CI/313/95/5 Dtd. Dispur 14/11/95 created District Industries Centre, Bongaigaon to fulfil the long standing demands of the people of the district. Presently the following are the existing infrastructure
A) Industrial Estate, New Bongaigaon
B) Commercial Estate, North Bongaigaon
C) Commercial Estate, Abhayapuri(for S/C)
D) Growth Centre, Khariza Dolaigaon
E) Industrial Area, DhaligaonBesides these, there are commercial Estate at Kashikotra(for S/T) and at Bhetagaon, Bijni.
Existing Industrial Structure: BRPL(Bongaigaon Refinery & Petro Chemicals Limited) one of the large scale industries of the whole NE Region falls under this district and creates a vital industrial atmosphare in the district which has given more than 1700Nos. direct employment.Th two spinning mills at Noapara near Bijni and Boitamari, LPG Bottling Plant at New Bongaigaon, Bharatpur Oxygen Gas, Dhaligaon, Prestage Udyog, a hume pipe abd railway sleeper manufacturing unit, Flour Mill, low ashcoal processing unit etc. Besides these there are about 420 SSI units functioning in the whole district.
Resource Available in the district: Agriculture is the main occupation of 75% of the inhabitants. The cultivable area is 1,54,443 hectres whereas cultivable waste land is 6054 hectres. The main hindrance for increase of production of paddy is the regular flood. The climate is suitable for all kinds of tropical fruits. Local fruits available are Amlokhi, Areca-nut, Banana, Guava, Lemon,Mango,Pineapple and orange.
Fish is an important item for preparation of local dish.The mighty Brahmaputra its tributaries,beels,ponds are the sources.
Livestock: The district has good scope for development of livestock and poultry. The major portion of population is of local variety.
Forest: Forest is one of the important resources of the district. The district is rich in natural vegetation. Northern part of the district falls under "Manas reserved forest". The valuable trees found in the forest are : Sal, Khair, Accasia, Cateshu, Sisoo, Simul, Koroi, Gameri. New forest plantation should be encouraged.
Sericulture: It is a traditional cottage industry and specially practised by SC,ST families in this district.
Infrastructure facility: In absence of adequate infrastructural facilities the industrial development can't take place as expected. So far as infrastructural facilities are concerned, the district is in an advantageous position. Power position of the state as whole is not conducive for industrial development. The B.G. line connected Bongaigaon with rest of the country.
PROSECTIVE INDUSTRIES
On the basis of resource and demand analysis of the district and taking on depth study of the existing small Industries, existing infrastructure available, Govt. petronage as spelt out in the industrial policy, we may safely conclude that there is bright prospect of SSI units of various nature in the district even with two bottle-neck of supply of power, water, skilled man power, transport facilities, credit assistance from financial institutes, social economic condition of the district, industrial accomodation etc. We may think of having new Small Scale Industries in various sectors.

A.Agrobased Industries: Agriculture account for thr livlihood of more that 75% of the district population. Based on the production of various agriculture crops following units may be suggested for setting up in the district

B.Forest Based Industries: Although forest based industries may lead to indiscrimanate exploitation of forest and cause ecological imbalance stress may be given for utilisation of bi-products and forest waste apart from simultaneous cultivation.

C.Minerial based Industries: All though minerial resources are limited in the district, resouces like lime stone and coal in Meghalaya, China clay from Bokajan and Karbi Anglong, Gypsum from Bhutan may be exploited for many Viable products. At present coal of Meghalaya is marketed through Jogighopa which may also have role for screening/processing etc. resulting low ash coal which is abundantly used in cement and carbide industry.
D.Live Stockbased Industries: Pork processing is the most promising venture in Bongaigaon District. The Dhaligaon Piggery Farm Co-Operative Society & Allied Industries Lt. at Kishanbazar is the first piggery farm in the district was established in 1993.
Large quantities of skins & hides are available in and around the district including Meghalaya.
Small tennary unit will be the composition units like lether shoes, chappals, hand & other bags. Based on raw materials that will be available from these tanning units a number of units for shoes,Chappals and house hold and cottage sector where in tennery units will acts as nodal units for down stream units.
E.Fishery, Dairy and Bio Gas Plant: There is tremendous scope for pisciculture farming as most of the area of the district particularly the Southern part are having with beels,ponds and low lying land. The Bongaigaon District Administration is also specially emphasised on eco-hatchery scheme in such type of area, fish processing and fish based ice factory have good scope particularly in Joghighopa area as Challantapara, Singimari, Duramari,Lalmati, Jogijhopa, Ikrabari area are more fish producing area and linked with nearby Dolani, Tamranga and Dheer Bill besides the river Brahmaputra.
Bio-gas plant may also be set up in rural areas for utilising the wastages to non-conventional energy and fuel for which DRDA has given special emphasis by granting subsidy etc.
F.Demand based Industry: The industries in this category have been classified as 1. Chemical 2. Mechanical 3. Textile 4. Electrical and Electronics and misc industries.
Some of the prospective chemical based industries are given below :
Blow moulded containers, Disposable cups and Plates, H.M and HDPE films & bags, PP/HDPE, Box strapping, Plastic article like toys, comb, hand operated machineries etc.
Electrical and elctronic based industry:
Transformer & Chokes, Inverter, Voltage stabilizer, emergency light, Amplifier & Speaker, electronic door beel, T.V. Antena & Booster.
